To Be Living

I am not an easy man to love, or to be with. But I doubt any of us are. We are all human, and that means being beautiful but also cracked. The beautiful part allows us to speak poetry into the lives of those we love. We can encourage a loved one to reach heights of greatness; we can elevate that person with a kiss or a compliment, a reassuring caress, or a candle lit at the appropriate time … or … [Read more...] about To Be Living

A Rare Gift (part I)

Three years ago, I got arrested for drunk driving. It was a terrible mistake, one that came with a steep penalty. Part of that penalty was enrolling in a three-month alcohol awareness class. I expected the worst from the class—to be shamed, to endure a three-hour lecture from a dull, listless instructor who criticized us and told us what horrible people we were. What I didn’t expect was … [Read more...] about A Rare Gift (part I)

Just The Way I Am

One of the interest things about being an actor in Los Angeles is rehearsing with other actors. This is often done at the actors’ homes. One often becomes privy to the personal lives of fellow actors. I did a performance once with a man from my class. The man’s name was Josh. He was skinny, somewhat nerdy looking, and his hair was thinning badly. I agreed to drive to his apartment in Sherman Oaks … [Read more...] about Just The Way I Am

It’s difficult for me to let go of things. When I believe in something, I go for it and hold on like crazy. Give everything I have. When I was playing music, I found it frustrating to discard songs my bandmates and I had written. I would often borrow short melodies or interesting guitar parts from those songs and use them in later ones. Writing is difficult, too. It pains me to hit the delete … [Read more...] about memories as whispers

saving the world! one petitioner at a time

Yesterday, I was walking down Market Street, one of the most crowded streets in the city. A young man was standing in the middle of the sidewalk, petitioning passersby for signatures. He interrupted a woman walking several feet in front of me. “Do your part to save the world,” he said. She blew him off and continued on he way. He said loudly, to anyone who would listen, “You’re an idiot!” I'm … [Read more...] about saving the world! one petitioner at a time
